Down & Out and Dirty Fuse live in Athens January 2011

This conversation is what first came to mind on the 6th night of 2011, when I first heard Dirty Fuse playing at Six D.O.G.S.

Incredible, but true. A Greek band playing surf tunes! That's what I thought back then anyway... And of course, the next line from Pulp Fiction that comes to mind is "Zed's dead baby... Zed's dead" because at that moment during the movie is when Bullwinkle is played, the tune that Dirty Fuse played that night.

All in all a very pleasant surprise, bearing in mind that we had gone to Six D.O.G.S. to see Down & Out. The band that we had already seen in December at Gagarin when they played support to The Sonics. Two of their members would later go on to form The Big Nose Attack, and if you're a regular reader of this blog, you'll know who THEY are... 

They had already played gigs all over Europe and their highlight was playing support to ZZ Top abroad...

So, it was a night that apart from good company also had lots of rock, lots of beer, lots of blues (albeit performed by white guys :LOL:), and of course the usual (should I call it obligatory?) cover of Prince's Kiss.

And as we can see from the following photo the audience was very keen on them...

The venue was great (it was my first time there), as small as was needed for such a gig and the ticket was only 7 Euros.

It even had a back yard...

...and also hosted exhibitions.

(By the way, whoever disses Kelly again will have to deal with me. Enough is enough! Go back to Brenda!)

The Sonics supported by Down & Out live in Athens December 2010

For the third consecutive day, a third consecutive gig, this time at Gagarin for The Sonics, on Friday the 3rd of December. The Sonics had been around since the 60's. I learned about them in 1989 when I heard "Have Love Will Travel" albeit covered by Crazyhead (an alternative band of that era). They had also come to Greece the previous year, in 2009, again at Gagarin, and I hadn't gone to see them. "I hope they come again" I thought. "But, they've been around since the '60's and are still playing live in 2010? They must be very old". And indeed they were!  However, The Sonics weren't the only reason why I went to Gagarin that night. I also went to see Down & Out, the Greek opening act, whose drummer was Little Tonnie a fellow member of No Surrender (a Greek community of Bruce Springsteen fans). This was the first time I saw his band live and later I followed him with his next one The Big Nose Attack who are a regular feature of this blog.

 

They played a very nice set and we were pleasantly surprised when they finished it with their own rendition of Prince's Kiss.

In the foyer their CD was on sale along with a 7 inch vinyl single  (which can easily fit inside a woman's handbag). Then, it was the turn of The Meanie Geanies, another Greek band comprising 4 women and a drummer of unknown gender, hidden behind his own hairstyle, who were playing a pure 60's garage rock style.

(The sound of their keyboards alone is enough to send you 60 years back in time). And finally it was time for The Sonics, with their own 60's garage-rock style with all our (their) favourite songs (eg Have Love Will Travel, The Witch) and several other rock'n'roll standards.

And, as far as Gagarin was concerned, it seems that you don't have to stay home in order to smoke suspicious substances. You just go to Gagarin and breathe deeply instead. And it's free! (OK, you'll have to pay 30 Euros for the gig ticket)

Down & Out - El Show Final

"Down & Out is a Southern Rock/blues band formed in 2003 in Athens Greece. All three members of the band just love good old rock n'roll, blues and hillbilly music and they just can't hide it!"
This is how Down & Out describe themselves. And they have been featured in this blog before in Greek posts several times, most importantly when they supported the Sonics when they played in Athens. They consist of:

BOOGIEMAN: TeleCOWster guitar, vocals, harmonica (yes, that's correct, I didn't make it up)

LITTLE TONNIE: Gretsch drums, piano and organ

VIRGIL: '62 Fender P-bass, backin' vocals

Now they have finally decided to call it a day with a final gig at After Dark a few days after The Western Ramblers and Penny Dreadful played there and documented on this blog's previous post. Meanwhile Boogieman and little Tonnie are continuing as a duo under the name The Big Nose Attack, which have also been featured on this blog in the past.

It was an incredible last stand featuring songs from their first album "Tres Weirdos", from their second still unreleased one (now we wonder, will it ever see the light of day? Keep checking http://www.myspace.com/downnoutband for updates) and also their (and our) favourite cover version, Prince's Kiss!

We really hope it's not really the end for them and we expect to meet them further on up the road...

The Big Nose Attack CD Release Party

Τελειώσαμε τη περσινη χρονιά στο blog με τους Big Nose Attack και αρχίζουμε και τη φετινή με τους Big Nose Attack. Και αν συνυπολογίσουμε ότι ξεκινήσαμε την περσινή χρονιά με τους Down + Out που είναι τα 2/3 των Big Nose Atτack, αρχίζει νομίζω να δημιουργείται μια παράδοση.


Έχοντας επιστρέψει από την Ευρωπαϊκή Big Noise περιοδεία τους διοργάνωσαν χθες βράδυ στο Tribe Bar στο Γκάζι ένα πάρτυ, πάλι με ελεύθερη είσοδο για τη κυκλοφορία του πρώτου τους CD, το οποίο μπορούσε κάποιος να το αγοράσει εκεί με μόνο 5 Ευρώ.

Έπαιξαν δικά τους κομμάτια από το νέο album, κάποια από αυτά εμνευσμένα από προσωπικές τους εμπειρίες (κυρίως στη Σαντορίνη) αλλά και διασκευές (ακόμη και Frank Zappa)

Να σημειώσουμε ότι πέρα από την κιθάρα (που είναι παλιά και καλή αλλά θέλει συχνά κούρδισμα) και τα ντραμς, μας μάγεψε το ηλεκτρικό ukelele και μείναμε έκθαμβοι παρατηρώντας ότι το "εργαλείο" που οι περισσότεροι έχουμε στην κουζίνα μας για να χτυπάμε την κρέμα γάλακτος μεταξύ άλλων, μπορεί να παράγει και μουσική!


Όπως βλέπουμε και από το setlist, είχαν προετοιμάσει και... τεκίλα για encore, αλλά με το που τελείωσαν το (προ)τελευταίο κομμάτι, ξεκίνησε να παίζει η μουσική του bar.



Δεν πειράζει! Ελπίζουμε εκεί γύρω στο Δεκέμβριο του 2012, αν είμαστε όλοι καλά, να διοργανώσουν κάποια εμφάνιση στην Αθήνα, ώστε να κλείσουμε με αυτούς το blog για το 2012. Κατά προτίμηση πριν τις 18 Δεκεμβρίου, στη περίπτωση που τότε όντως έρθει το τέλος του κόσμου. Ιδανική ημερομηνία η 17η Δεκεμβρίου. Going out with a bang. Or a twang!

The Big Nose Attacks Blues Bar!

Αρχίσαμε τη χρονιά με τους Down + Out, θα την τελειώσουμε με τους Big Nose Attack. Γιατί; Μα γιατί οι Big Nose Attack είναι τα 2/3 των Down + Out. Και είναι και φίλοι μας.
Εμφανίστηκαν στις 13 Οκτωβρίου στο Blues Bar στην Πανόρμου, δωρεάν. Ημέρα γενικής απεργίας χωρίς συγκοινωνίες, έφαγα μια περιουσία στα ταξί μέχρι να πάω και να ρθω, αλλά χαλάλι τους. Και το Blues, μπορεί να μην το λες μεγάλο, ήταν όμως γεμάτο!

Λίγες μέρες μετά, ξεκίνησαν περιοδεία σε Ρουμανία, Πολωνία, Τσεχία, Γερμανία και Αυστρία. Πρόσφατα μάλιστα βρήκα ένα άρθρο γι αυτούς σε ιστοσελίδα της Πολωνίας!

Dirty Fuse + Down & Out @ Six D.O.G.S.

Αυτή η στιχομυθία μου ήρθε στο μυαλό μόλις πρωτάκουσα, το βράδυ των Φώτων, τους Dirty Fuse στο Six D.O.G.S.

Απίστευτο κι όμως αληθινό. Υπάρχει Ελληνικό συγκρότημα που παίζει surf! Και βέβαια, η επόμενη ατάκα από το Pulp Fiction που έρχεται στο μυαλό είναι το "Zed's dead baby... Zed's dead" μια και σε εκείνο το σημείο της ταινίας "πέφτει" το Bullwinkle που οι Dirty Fuse παίξανε εκείνο το βράδυ.

Ευχάριστη έκπληξη λοιπόν, αν σκεφτεί κανείς ότι εκείνο το βράδυ πήγαμε στο Six D.O.G.S. για να δούμε τους Down & Out. Tους οποίους είχαμε ήδη δει το Δεκέμβριο στο Gagarin όταν έπαιξαν support στους Sonics. Και αν νομίζετε ότι τους κάνω απροκάλυπτη διαφήμιση από αυτό το blog... έχετε απόλυτο δίκιο μια που στη παρέα μου ξέρουμε τον drummer!

Έχουν παίξει επίσης support στους ZZ Top στο εξωτερικό, έχουν παίξει σε συναυλίες στην Ευρώπη...

Ήταν λοιπόν μια βραδυά που εκτός από καλή παρέα είχε άφθονο rock, άφθονη μπύρα, άφθονα blues (έστω και από λευκόύς(εντάξει, το παράκανα μ'αυτό το αστείο, το ξέρω :LOL:)), και φυσικά την (να την πω καθιερωμένη;) διασκευή του Kiss του Prince.
Και όπως μπορούμε να δούμε το κοινό ήταν ιδιαίτερα ενθουσιώδες...


Ωραίος ο χώρος (πρώτη φορά πήγα εκεί), όσο μικρός χρειάζεται για μια τέτοια συναυλία και εισητήριο μόλις 7 Ευρώ.

Μέχρι και έναν κήπο στο βάθος έχει...

...και εκθέσεις φιλοξενεί.
