Smashing Pumpkins live in Athens July 2024

It's not common to stage an indoor concert in the summer in Greece, but this is what happened with the Smashing Pumpkins. I was going to see them in the summer of 2007 with the Manic Street Preachers at Terra Vibe. This was the perfect combination for me because in my opinion those were the two most important independent bands of the 90's, the former from the USA and the latter from the UK. Unfortunately, due to the massive forest wildfires of that summer the concert was cancelled. There weren't any wildfires near the venue but since Terra Vibe is in a forest it was decided to cancel it in order to prevent another possible wildfire. The years went by, and I finally saw the Manic Street Preachers in 2019 at the Brussels Summer Festival. And last winter when this concert was announced, I realized it was time for me to finally see the Smashing Pumpkins and bought a FOS ticket on the day they were released.

It was indeed a very hot day as I got there and we were promised that the venue would have ventilation although I'm not so sure if that was true. The opening act was Tom Morello. Now I had seen Tom Morello back in 2012 at the Hard Rock Calling Festival supporting (and later in the day playing with) Bruce Springsteen And The E Street Band. But that was a different Tom Morello. It was "Tom Morello The Nightwatchman" a more acoustic version. This one was a full-on electric Tom Morello something that I had yet to experience. And that's how the set started: with a song ("I'm A Soldier (In The Army Of Love)) co-written by his son. What's more, his son was on stage as well playing the guitar. Later on we got something we hoped for but were probably not expecting: Bruce's own "The Ghost Of Tom Joad". After all, Rage Against the Machine had covered that song and Tom himself joined Bruce on stage back in 2012 for that same song (and a few more as well). In the course of the set we got, among other things instrumental parts of several Rage Against The Machine songs culminating with "Killing In The Name" where we, the audience, had to provide the vocals. We duly obliged. It all ended with another cover: John Lennon's "Power To The People".

 

 

Afterwards it was of course time for The Smashing Pumpkins. By looking around at the audience it was clear that everyone was feeling the heat by that time. Their set relied heavily on "Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness" but there were several songs from their other 90's albums that we love so much and were, after all, what the audience had come to listen to. They even covered a U2 song: "Zoo Station". There was only one problem: The sound was awful. I thought at the time that this was a problem only for us who were at the front of the stage but it was also mentioned by other fans on social media posts and on internet reviews of the gig.

It all went well in the end. They played quite a long set and I went home satisfied now that my dream had come true: After the Manic Street Preachers, I had now also seen the Smashing Pumpkins live.

Hard Rock Calling 2012 - Bruce Springsteen

Having already seen Bruce Springsteen at Hard Rock Calling Festival in 2009 and having been featured on the DVD for posterity, we thought it would be a good idea to see him again, at the same festival three years later. However, before we even left for London, we dreaded the prospect of rain. Having already experienced THAT RAIN in Florence a month before, we kept hearing news reports that it was raining every day on London, that Hyde Park had been turned into a swamp, etc. The organizersr had spread sawdust on the ground (presumably so that we would not sink in the mud)...

...and so we wore our boots (well, some of us, anyway).

Of course, after the concert was over the sawdust and mud mix had turned into this...

...which on top of that gave off a smell that was bound to get you high!

Since there was no pit procedure nor roll calls (there wasn't even a pit) we joined the queue 90 minutes before the gates were due to open. In moderately good weather.

And then it started raining. Anyway. At some point, the doors were opened and after we were searched we got in. There was no way we could run to get to the front, running was impossible on top of the sawdust and mud mixture. We did get to the front, though. And more people came. So we had to stand, in that position, for the next 10 hours (sitting on the sawdust, although possible, was definitely NOT recommended).

Out of these 10 hours, we would spend 7 of them waiting for Bruce Springsteen.

They went by very quickly however, partly because of the good company and partly because of the quick succession of the artists appearing. Let's see now:

The festival was opened by Hey, Monea!, winners of the Hard Rock Rising competition, the winner of which had the chance to open for Bruce Springsteen. Quite good.

The bill continued with Tom Morello - The Nightwatchman. The Rage Against The Machine frontman, alone with his guitar, was teaching the British to sing protest songs. He even brought some Essex firemen who were on strike with him on stage for the last song.

 

Then it was time for Lady Antebellum. This was the point where we expected to get bored. We didn't, because Lady Antebellum (who played something that could be labeled "new country") are good musicians (although they insisted on starting some of the songs with pre-recorded beats) and they also had a good light show.

After Lady Antebellum, Bruce Springsteen came on stage! Not to perform though, but to introduce a living legend instead: John Fogerty from Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Later, Bruce came back on stage, to join Fogerty on Rocking All Over The World.

Finally, after Fogerty's set, it was time for Bruce Springsteen. We almost didn't notice him when he came up on stage alone. We were wondering what he was going to play. In 2009 he had started, joined by the full band with London Calling by The Clash. This time, he said he would start with the first song he played on British soil, back in 1975: Thunder Road. Alone, with his harmonica and Roy Bittan on piano.

The weather was good when Bruce's set started. "Well, give it fifteen minutes" Bruce said. And indeed, it later rained, stopped, rained again, stopped again, then the sun came out, and while we were searching for our sunglasses... it started raining again and on top of that it got cold...

It was clear from the beginning that this concert was going to be a little bit different. Bruce himself looked not tired as some people thought, but "emotionally charged" would be a more accurate description. He did a full roll-call, asking for each member of the band, eg "Is Professor Roy Bittan in the house?", but, contrary to Florence and Trieste, he then asked "Are we missing anybody?" (meaning Clarence Clemons and Danny Federici, the two E Street Band members that were no longer with us) concluding that "Well, if we're here and you're here, then they're here". All this procedure was taking place during the first leg of the tour in The United States, but not at the recent concerts in Europe. Indeed, at some point, while he was lying down on the stage floor with Jake Clemons (Clarence's nephew) he was talking to him about "all those stories I could tell you with your uncle".

Suddenly, just when he had finished another song, he remembered a request sign he had seen a fan hold earlier. So he went down again among the audience and found it. A Spanish fan had asked for "Take Em As They Come". He picked up the request sign and brought it on stage with him. The fan had noted all the concerts he had attended that year on which, of course, the song had not been played. Bruce started reading it, while commenting at the same time:

"This guy wants to hear an obscure song, paid his money in Seville, didn't hear it there... Pays more money in Barcelona, that wasn't f**king there. Then he went to Donostia... no, it didn't get played! Made it all the way to Madrid... That's a big investment now my friend... No, no song. Paris? No f**king good! Got to see the Eiffel Tower, though. Ah, but London! ha, ha! Tonight my friend... you're gonna hear this damn thing!"

And of course he played it!

At some point Fogerty came up on stage again, paying back his favour to Bruce and they played The Promised Land together.

Someone else who also came up on stage, not once, but several times, was Tom Morello making us think that maybe he should be given a place on The E Street Band now.

The best of these times was when they performed together The Ghost Of Tom Joad, a song that Morello has made it "his own" with his unique guitar solo.

Bruce however, had saved the best for last. "I've waited 50 years for this. A special guest is coming up..." The special guest was none other than Sir Paul McCartney!

The funny thing was that Paul McCartney had also come up on stage at the previous Hard Rock Calling I had attended, back in 2009, at the Neil Young concert when they performed "A Day In The Life" together. This time, with Bruce they performed "I Saw Her Standing There" and "Twist & Shout".

And that was when, towards the end of Twist & Shout that the incident which everybody has connected with that concert took place: We suddenly thought that one of the speakers was not operating. What in fact had happened was that most speakers were off because the organizers had cut the power off and what we were hearing was the natural, unamplified sound of the band since we were so close to the stage. We had heard a lot about curfews at British concerts, and because the curfew for this one had already been broken I realized what had happened. And when Bruce approached the microphone to announce that "London! You've just seen...the heart-stopping, pants-dropping, house-rocking, earth- quaking, booty-shaking, Viagra-taking, love-making -: Le-gen-dary E - Street - Band!", we could hear nothing. He went to the nearby mike and the same thing happened. Believing that it was a technical problem, he made a signal meaning "Do you want us to play one more?" when he was approached by an employee of the organizers who whispered something in his ear. So Bruce made a characteristic gesture meaning "There's nothing else I can do". Nevertheless, he grabbed his guitar, approached the - useless by now - microphone and quickly played a snippet of "Goodnight Irene", truly unplugged. Thankfully, we were close enough to the stage to be able to hear it. I won't say anything else about this incident, most of its aspects are already well-known. What most people don't know is that they had locked the artists in their dressing rooms and did not let them leave until all the festival goers had departed from Hyde Park. They were probably afraid that they would go back on stage and start playing unplugged! The concert was on Saturday night. And for those that might say that there were some people that had to go to work on Sunday morning, let me remind you that the nearest residences were at Park Lane. And for those that don't know what Park Lane is, I'll just say that it is the most expensive street in Monopoly. That's all you need to know. Because apart from the curfew and everything else, the sound was quite low for a rock concert. The previous winter, a nearby resident had complained that "with all these concerts and their noise we can't even open a window during the summer and enjoy the tennis at Wimbledo on the telly".

Finally, we should also mention that maybe festivals are not suitable for the hardcore fans of an artist. As somebody mentioned in this blog post "So while Springsteen was sharing poignant memories of the late Clarence Clemons with his saxman nephew, I was hearing about Sebastian's sales figures[...]While The Boss was introducing Empty Sky, I was hearing about Sharon's sex life as she bared all to a stranger she'd met, and would probably bare all again later[...]As Bruce explained how Thunder Road was the first song he'd ever played on UK soil, I was listening to four burly, boozed-up middle-age muppets talking about a mate's stag do."
All in all, despite all these problems, it was a great concert. And although we couldn't expect it to also be released on DVD, several songs from the night were featured on the "Springsteen & I" DVD.

Hard Rock Calling 2012 - Μας έβγαλαν την πρίζα

Λοιπόν, τώρα πια όλοι θα ξέρετε για το συμβάν με την πρίζα στο Hyde Park. Αλλά ας πάρουμε τα πράγματα από την αρχή...

Το ταξίδι μας στο Λονδίνο ξεκίνησε με... Rolling Stones. Περάσαμε πρώτα μια βόλτα από το Sommerset House όπου οι ίδιοι οι Stones θα εγκαινίαζαν μια φωτογραφική έκθεση για τα 50 χρόνια από την ίδρυσή τους.

Ιδού και η limo του Charlie Watts.

Την επομένη πήγαμε φυσικά να δούμε και την έκθεση που είχε πλέον ανοίξει για το κοινό.

Το Λονδίνο ήταν έτοιμο για τους Ολυμπιακούς Αγώνες, αλλά αυτό δεν ήταν φανερό παρά σε ορισμένα μόνο σημεία

Στην πρώτη βραδυνή μας έξοδο, πήγαμε σε ένα πολύ καλό μαγαζί στο Soho, το "Ain't Nothing But The Blues". Έχει κάθε βράδυ μπόλικα live και... does exactly what it says on the tin!

To επόμενο βράδυ πήγαμε και σε ένα party στην Pride Of Paddington Pub που γινόταν για την συναυλία του Bruce Springsteen την επομένη. Μαζευτήκαμε εκεί διάφοροι Μπρουσοφάνς από όλη την Ευρώπη, που ήδη γνωριζόμασταν μέσω internet.

Και έτσι ήρθε η επόμενη μέρα, η μέρα της συναυλίας. Πριν καν ξεκινήσουμε για το Λονδίνο, ζούσαμε με το φόβο της βροχής. Ακούγαμε ιστορίες ότι βρέχει κάθε μέρα, το Hyde Park έχει μετατραπεί σε βούρκο, κτλ. Οι διοργανωτές έστρωσαν το χώρο με πριονίδι (προφανώς για να μη βουλιάξουμε μέσα στις λάσπες)...

...και εμείς φορέσαμε τις γαλότσες μας.

Κάποιοι Άγγλοι είναι βεβαίως πιο εφευρετικοί με αυτόν τον καιρό...

Και βεβαίως με το που τελειώνει η συναυλία τα λασποπριονίδια έχουν γίνει κάπως έτσι...

...άσε που βγάζουν και μια μυρωδιά με την οποία γίνεσαι πραγματικά high!

Καθώς δεν υπήρχε διαδικασία με pit και roll calls (δεν υπήρχε καν pit) στηθήκαμε στην ουρά μιάμιση ώρα πριν. Σε σχετικά καλό καιρό.

Και μετά άρχισε να βρέχει. Anyway. Κάποια στιγμή ανοίγουν οι πόρτες και αφού μας κάνουν έλεγχο περνάμε μέσα. Ούτε λόγος φυσικά να τρέξουμε για να μπουμε μπροστά, το τρέξιμο ήταν αδύνατο μέσα στα λασποπριονίδια. Φτάσαμε όμως μπροστά. Και ο κόσμος πύκνωσε. Οπότε έπρεπε να μείνουμε όρθιοι, σ'αυτή τη θέση, για τις επόμενες 10 ώρες (γιατί που να κάτσεις στα λασποπριονίδια).

Από τις 10 αυτές ώρες, τις 7 θα τις ξοδεύαμε περιμένοντας τον Bruce Springsteen.

Όμως πέρασαν γρήγορα, λόγω της παρέας και της γρήγορης εναλλαγής των καλλιτεχνών. Ας δούμε πώς:

Τη συναυλία ξεκίνησαν οι Hey, Monea!, νικητές του διαγωνισμού Hard Rock Rising, ο νικητής του οποίου είχε την ευκαιρία να ανοίξει τη συναυλία του Bruce Springsteen. Αρκετά καλοί.

Συνέχεια με Tom Morello - The Nightwatchman. Ο frontman των Rage Against The Machine, μόνος με την κιθάρα του, μαθαινε στους Άγγλους να τραγουδούν τραγούδια διαμαρτυρίας. Μέχρι και τους απεργούς πυροσβέστες του Essex ανέβασε στο τέλος στη σκηνή για να τραγουδήσουν μαζί του.

Συνέχεια με Lady Antebellum. Εδώ ήταν το σημείο που περιμέναμε να σκυλοβαρεθούμε. Δεν σκυλοβαρεθήκαμε τελικά γιατί οι Lady Antebellum (που παίζουν κάτι που θα μπορούσε να το πει κανείς new country) είναι καλοί μουσικοί (αν και διέκρινα μια εμμονή με τα beats - κάποια απ'αυτά προηχογραφημένα - στην αρχή του κάθε κομματιού) έχουν ωραίο light show, απλά είναι λίγο βλαχαδερά (προσωπική άποψη βεβαίως). Και ο τραγουδιστής το ρίχνει αρκετά στην ποζεριά.

Και μετά τους Lady Antebellum, στη σκηνή ανεβαίνει ο Bruce Springsteen! Όχι όμως για να παίξει, αλλά για να παρουσιάσει ένα ζωντανό θτύλο: τον John Fogerty των Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Ο Bruce θα ξανανέβει στη σκηνή λίγο αργότερα, για να συνοδεύσει τον Fogerty στο Rocking All Over The World.

Και μετά το set του Fogerty, ήρθε η ώρα για τον Bruce Springsteen. Ο οποίος, χωρίς καμμιά προαναγγελία ανεβαίνει μόνος του στη σκηνή. Αναρωτιόμαστε τι θα παίξει. Το 2009 είχε ξεκινήσει, παίζοντας με όλη τη μπάντα το London Calling των Clash. Αυτή τη φορά, μας ανακοίνωσε ότι θα ξεκινήσει με το πρώτο κομμάτι που έπαιξε ποτέ σε Βρετανικό έδαφος τότε, στο 1975: Thunder Road. Μόνος του, με τη φυσαρμόνικα και τον Roy Bittan στο πιάνο.

Η συναυλία ξεκίνησε με πολύ καλο καιρό παραδόξως. "Well, give it fifteen minutes" σχολίασε ο Bruce. Και πράγματι αργότερα ξανάβρεξε, σταμάτησε, ξανάρχισε, ξανασταμάτησε, βγήκε ο ήλιος, τόσο δυνατός μάλιστα που αρχίσαμε να σκάμε και να ψάχνουμε γυαλιά ηλίου... και μετά ξανάβρεξε και έβαλε και λίγη ψύχρα, έτσι για ποικιλία...

Από την αρχή φάνηκε λοιπόν ότι η αποψινή συναυλία θα ήταν λίγο διαφορετική. Ο ίδιος ο Bruce φαινόταν όχι κουρασμένος όπως είπαν μερικοί, αλλά "συναισθηματικά φορτισμένος" (δεν ξέρω πώς αλλιώς να το πω). Έκανε ένα πλήρες roll-call, ρωτώντας για κάθε μέλος της μπάντας, πχ "Is Professor Roy Bittan in the house?", αλλά σε αντίθεση με τη Φλωρεντία και την Τεργέστη, κατόπιν ρώτησε "Are we missing anybody?" (εννοώντας τον Clarence Clemons και τον Danny Federici, τα δύο μέλη της E Street Band που δεν βρίσκονται πια στη ζωή) καταλήγοντας ότι "Well, if we're here and you're here, then they're here". Όλη αυτή η διαδικασία γινόταν τις πρώτες μέρες της περιοδείας στην Αμερική, όχι όμως και σε όλες τις πρόσφατες συναυλίες στην Ευρώπη. Μάλιστα σε κάποιο σημείο ενώ έχουν ουσιαστικά ξαπλώσει μαζί με τον Jake Clemons (ανηψιό του Clarence) στη σκηνή, του μιλάει γιά "όλες αυτές τις ιστορίες που θα μπορούσα να σου διηγηθώ με τον θείο σου".

Ξαφνικά εκεί που μόλις έχει ολοκληρώσει ένα άλλο κομμάτι θυμάται ένα request sign που είχε δει να κρατά ένας fan νωρίτερα. Ξανακατεβαίνει στο κοινό και το βρίσκει. Ένας Ισπανός έχει ζητήσει το "Take Em As They Come". Παίρνει το request sign και το ανεβάζει στη σκηνή. Ο Ισπανός έχει σημειώσει επάνω όλες τις φετινές συναυλίες που έχει πάει όπου το κομμάτι δεν έχει φυσικά παιχτεί. Ο Bruce αρχίζει να το διαβάζει, σχολιάζοντάς το ταυτόχρονα:

"This guy wants to hear an obscure song, paid his money in Seville, didn't hear it there... Pays more money in Barcelona, that wasn't f**king there. Και φυσικά το έπαιξε!

Στη σκηνή ανέβηκε κάποια στιγμή ο Fogerty, ανταποδίδοντας στον Bruce και έπαιξαν μαζί το Promised Land

Στη σκηνη ανέβηκε επίσης, όχι μία, αλλά κάμποσες φορές και ο Tom Morello σε σημείο που να αρχίσουμε να πιστεύουμε ότι πρέπει να του δωθεί μια μόνιμη θέση στην E Street Band πλέον.

Η κορυφαία από όλες αυτές τις στιγμές όπως είναι όταν είπαν μαζί το Ghost Of Tom Joad, ένα κομμάτι που ο Morello το έχει κάνει "δικό του" με το σόλο του στην κιθάρα.

Το καλύτερο όμως ο Bruce μας το κρατούσε για το τέλος. "I've waited 50 years for this. A special guest is coming up..." Ο special guest ήταν βεβαίως ο Sir Paul McCartney!

Το αστείο της υπόθεσης ήταν πως o Paul McCartney είχε ανέβει στη σκηνή και στο προηγούμενο Hard Rock Calling που είχα πάει, το 2009, στη συναυλία του Neil Young για να ερμηνεύσουν μαζί το A Day In The Life. Τωρα μαζι με τον Bruce έπαιξαν μαζί το I Saw Her Standing There και κατόπιν το Twist & Shout.

Και εκεί, προς το τέλος του Twist & Shout ήταν που έγινε το... αποννενοημένο! Καταλάβαμε κάποια στιγμή ότι κάποιο ηχείο σταμάτησε να παίζει. Στην ουσία, αυτό που συνέβη ήταν ότι τα περισσότερα ηχεία σταμάτησαν να παίζουν μια που οι διοργανωτές κατέβασαν τους διακόπτες και αυτό που εμείς ακούγαμε ήταν ο φυσικός ήχος της μπάντας μια που βρισκόμασταν πολύ κοντά στη σκηνή. Επειδή είχαμε ήδη ακούσει πολλά για τα curfews στις Αγγλικές συναυλίες (την ώρα δηλαδη που είναι υποχρεωμενοι να έχουν ολοκληρώσει τη συναυλία), και επειδή αυτό το όριο είχε ήδη ξεπεραστεί προ πολλού κατάλαβα από την αρχή τι ακριβώς είχε συμβεί. Και όταν ο Bruce πλησίασε στο μικρόφωνο για να ανακοινώσει "London! You've just seen...the heart-stopping, pants-dropping, house-rocking, earth- quaking, booty-shaking, Viagra-taking, love-making -: Le-gen-dary E - Street - Band!", δεν ακουγόταν τίποτα. Πήγε σ'ενα διπλανό ούτε και εκεί ακουγόταν τίποτα. Πιστεύοντας πως είναι κάποιο τεχνικό πρόβλημα, κάνει τη χαρακτηριστική χειρονομία που σημαίνει "θέλετε να παίξουμε άλλο ένα;" και εκείνη τη στιγμή τον πλησιάζει ένας υπάλληλος της διοργανώτριας εταιρίας και του ψυθιρίζει κάτι στο αυτί. Οπότε ο Bruce κάνει μια άλλη χαρακτηριστική κίνηση που σημαίνει "δεν μπορώ να κάνω τίποτα πλέον". Παρόλα αυτά παίρνει τη κιθάρα του, πλησιάζει το - κλειστό πλέον - μικρόφωνο και παίζει στα γρήγορα το "Goodnight Irene", κυριολεκτικά unplugged. Ευτυχώς, ήμασταν πολύ κοντά στη σκηνή και μπορέσαμε να το ακούσουμε. Δεν θα πω περισσότερα πράγματα για το συμβάν, τα περισσότερα είναι ήδη γνωστά. Αυτό που ίσως πολλοί δεν ξέρουν είναι ότι κλείδωσαν τους μουσικούς στα καμαρίνια τους και δεν του άφησαν να βγουν παρά μόνο αφότου έφυγε και ο τελευταίος θεατής από το Hyde Park. Φοβόντουσαν μήπως ξαναβγούν και αρχίσουν να παίζουν, έστω και ακουστικά. Η συναυλία ήταν Σάββατο βράδυ. Και για όσους πουν ότι υπάρχουν κάποιοι που δουλεύουν τη Κυριακή το πρωί, να υπενθυμίσω ότι τα κοντινότερα σπίτια βρίσκονται στην Park Lane. Και για όσους δεν γνωρίζουν τι εστί Park Lane, θα πω απλώς πως είναι ο ακριβότερος δρόμος στη Monopoly. Αυτό αρκεί. Γιατί εκτός των άλλων, πέρα και από το curfew, η ένταση του ήχου ήταν σχετικά χαμηλή για ροκ συναυλία. Είχε προηγηθεί το χειμώνα διαμαρτυρία κατοίκου ότι "μ'αυτές τις συναυλίες και τη φασαρία τους δεν μπορούμε το καλοκαίρι να ανοίξουμε το παράθυρο και να απολαύσουμε στην τηλεόραση το τέννις στο Wimbledon".

Τέλος, κάτι ακόμα που πρέπει να επισημάνουμε είναι πως τα φεστιβάλ ίσως δεν ενδείκνυνται για τους σκληροπηρυνικούς fans ενός καλλιτέχνη. Όπως αναφέρε κάποιος σε αυτό το blog post "So while Springsteen was sharing poignant memories of the late Clarence Clemons with his saxman nephew, I was hearing about Sebastian's sales figures[...]While The Boss was introducing Empty Sky, I was hearing about Sharon's sex life as she bared all to a stranger she'd met, and would probably bare all again later[...]As Bruce explained how Thunder Road was the first song he'd ever played on UK soil, I was listening to four burly, boozed-up middle-age muppets talking about a mate's stag do."

Επέστρεψα στο Hyde Park την επόμενη μέρα για τον Paul Simon. Λόγω της απίστευτης ταλαιπωρίας από την προηγούμενη μέρα δεν πήγα νωρίς και έφτασα όταν άρχισε να παίζει η Alysson Krauss που εμφανιζόταν αμέσως πριν τον Paul Simon και η οποία, σε αντίθεση με τους Lady Antebellum, απέδειξε ότι μπορείς να παίζεις και country χωρίς απαραίτητα να είσαι και βλαχαδερό.

Και ήρθε η ώρα για τον Paul Simon, ο οποίος ξεκίνησε με παλιά κλασικά του κομμάτια από την εποχή των Simon & Garfunkel (Me & Julio Down By The Schoolyard) αλλά και από τη solo καριέρα του (Slip Slidin' Away).

Κάλεσε ως guest τον Jimmy Cliff...

... και αργότερα τους Ladysmith Black Mambazo και παίξανε ολόκληρο το Graceland, που ήταν και ο σκοπός αυτής της συναυλίας, ο εορτασμός δηλαδή των 25 χρόνων από τη κυκλοφορία του κλασικού αυτού album.

Ο ήχος ήταν απελπιστικά χαμηλός και αν δεν έπιανες σχετικά καλή θέση δεν άκουγες μουσική, αλλά τις συνομιλίες των διπλανών σου. Ο καιρός ήταν καλυτερος, βγήκε και λίγο ήλιος, δεν έβρεξε, αλλά έβαλε αρκετή ψύχρα στο τέλος.

Και έτσι φτάσαμε στη Δευτέρα, που ήταν η μέρα της επιστροφής, με πολλές βόλτες στα δισκάδικα του Λονδίνου (όσα έχουν απομείνει)...

...(Εδώ μάλιστα βρισκότανε κάποτε το θρυλικό Virgin Megastore)...

...και στις Λονδρέζικες pubs όπου μεταξύ αλλων φάγαμε smoked salmon & scrambled eggs για πρωινό και καλαμαράκια για μεσημεριανό.

Διαμονή πάλι σε hostel, μόνο που αυτή τη φορά, σε αντίθεση με τη Φλωρεντία, ήταν καθαρό και περιποιημένο

Το καλύτερο απ'όλα; Γλυτώσαμε τις χειρότερες μέρες του κάυσωνα στην Αθήνα...
