Dance Craze - The Best Of British Ska .... Live!

What is Dance Craze? Well, let me start by saying that I'm referring to a film. A 1981 film about the 2 Tone bands and the ska revival at the beginning of the 80's.

I got interested in that scene when I read about Madness and The Specials back in the day. I hadn't heard any of their music but I saw the albums and their reviews in a Greek music magazine so I bought "One Step Beyond" the debut album by Madness. According to the article I had read "ska is reggae played very fast". It also stated that "there's reggae, there's ska and in between there's rock steady whose tempo is somewhere in between reggae and ska". The article erroneously stated that "ska had evolved from reggae" when in fact the truth is that it happened the other way round. The bands that played that music according to the article were "Madness, The Specials, The Selecters (sic) and the Ruts" (As we all know that band's proper name is "The Selecter"). So after "One Step Beyond" I bought the first Specials album, their "Too Much Too Young" single and the first Selecter album. I didn't however buy anything from The Ruts because they weren't mentioned again as part of that scene. Instead I bought albums by The Beat and The Bad Manners.

And suddenly, at some point, all these bands appeared together in a live album called "Dance Craze". This was apparently the soundtrack of a movie showing all these bands playing live. Of course the movie was never shown in Greece, but the album was released featuring a poster with all 6 bands (Madness, The Specials, The Selecter, The Beat, The Bad Manners and The Bodysnatchers). 

 

I never managed to find the film after I had moved to Britain and when I once again looked for it recently I learnt that it had never been released on DVD. I managed however to find a VHS copy. So the next thing I had to do was buy a VCR! 

I managed to find a second hand stereo one and once I had connected everything I managed to finally see the movie 40 years later! Well, better late than never!

I have followed the 2 Tone scene over the years buying more albums from these bands and I even managed to see two of them live: Madness in 2007 and The Specials in 2010. I have just been informed though that Dance Craze is now being released on DVD and on a deluxe edition triple CD. I have already ordered both and I will finally manage to see a restored stereo version.

Ejekt Festival 2007

As we are getting ready for the 2017 Ejekt Festival in a few days, let's go back in time to 2007 to see what happened at that same festival 10 years ago.

The reason I decided to go that year was to see Madness. i had been a fan since 1979, not only of them, but of the whole ska revival / 2 Tone movement which also featured The Specials, Selecter, The Beat and Bad Manners. In 2008 The Specials reformed and I would get to them as well in 2010 but that's another story...

What I hadn't realized up to the day of the festival was that Madness were not the headliners. They were the opening act, to be followed by The Beastie Boys and finally Underworld. When I realized that Madness were due to appear at 7 o' clock I had to hurry from home to the other edge of the city towards the Baseball training ground left over from the 2004 Olympic Games where the festival was taking place.
I got there on time and the only strange thing I noticed at the entrance was that the security people were using dogs (German sheperds in fact). What for? Intimidation? Who knows, the dogs looked lovable, though. As I got inside, I saw that the Ejekt Festival t-shirts were free! Yes, free! So, I grabbed one. (It was a good thing that I did, as we will see later)
Finally, Madness came up on stage. I am hardly exaggerating when I say that I was waiting 27 years for that moment. They played all the songs we wanted to hear and their energy was tremendous despite all the years that had gone by. (They're still at it nowadays, 10 years later, and that's no surprise). The audience participated in that party (for that was what it was, a big party), and the biggest proof of this was the cloud of dust that rose among the audience in front of the stage and didn't settle down until the end of the set. It was of course caused by the continuous and endless dancing. After all, the motto of the band when they started out was "F**k art, let's dance!" and both audience and band stayed true to that.

(I had memorized this while I was still in secondary school, you know!)

After Madness I had a walk around the festival grounds where everything still looked normal, while waiting for The Beastie Boys.

Indeed, the Beasties came on stage a few minutes later, telling us how much they enjoyed being on the same bill with Madness which was one of their favourite bands and they used to listen to them when they were in their teens. Among well-known songs like "No Sleep Til' Brooklyn" they also played some wonderful instrumentals from their current album at that time "The Mix Up"

At some point, during their set a huge black smoke column was noticed, coming from the back of the venue. What we learnt afterwards was that some people invaded the venue throwing petrol bombs setting on fire several cars in the parking lot in the process. The Beastie Boys had to leave the stage mid-set (thankfully they had been playing for quite some time), Madness managed to hide in their dressing room, while a member of Underworld was injured by a brick thrown at him.

Madness were caught in the middle of a riot backstage at a gig in Athens on Saturday.

As part of the summer prep for their forthcoming 'lucky 7' album, Madness alongside the Beastie Boys and Underworld played the Athens Ejekt festival.

Following their performance, the band were decompressing in the dressing rooms reflecting on another storming gig.
However, their high spirits were soon extinguished as raised voices, followed by angry shouting, crashing windows, maced security guards and violent explosions signaled total mayhem in the backstage compound. The Beastie Boys, who were half way through their set were forced to abandon their performance amid genuine fears for their safety.

Absolute chaos ensued, as 30-40 masked, baton wielding assailants carrying CS gas canisters labeled as 'anarchists' by the authorities, vandalized and robbed bars, attacked festival security workers, destroyed portacabins and petrol bombed vehicles.

Fortunately the bands very experienced crew kept the band barricaded in their dressing room whilst the attack went on. After 30 terrifying minutes, the group made a dash for it, stopping passing traffic to escape the scene.

Others were not so lucky, Rick Smith from pioneering British electronic out-fit Underworld was hospitalized after being allegedly hit with a brick! Thankfully he is now safe in the UK receiving treatment. Several other people including security guards were also injured, however, it's not clear at this stage how many or just how badly.

Guitarist, Chrissy Boy Foreman said: "i knew something was up when i got on the plane at gate 13 and on seat 13 on the way there."

With nothing left for us to do, we headed towards the exit. Before leaving however, I headed towards the bar. I walk up to the barman and I say "One Coke please". The barman takes out a box full of cokes from the fridge, lays it on top of the bar and says: "Take as many as you want. We also have Fanta". As it turned out this guy wasn't the barman but one of the people who were looting the bars. All, the organizers, staff AND the security guards (including the dogs) had left.

I just took one Coke (which I had paid for anyway by means of the drinlk tokens I had purchased or "Festival Currency" as it was christened by Ekekt) and turned towards the exit.

What I saw there were cars burning, the kiosks (including the one with the free t-shirts) also burning, no security guards, firemen or police to be seen.

And just as I thought that it could not get any worse, it did. Like this:

I took the night tram to start my return journey home and a car got in its way,  the driver obviously thinking (as Greek drivers usually do) that it could cross the tram lines before the tram itself could reach him. Wrong!

I finally took a taxi home since I had to catch a flight to France the following day to see The Rolling Stones in Lyon (but that's another story which you can read about here). 

I never claimed compensation for my ticket. None was given anyway. I saw the band that I wanted to see, Madness, with The Beastie Boys as an added bonus. I didn't go to the festival to see Underworld. However, if I do decide to see them in the future I will have to travel abroad since they announced that they (understandably) would not perform in Greece in the future. Ever. I suspect that even Madness won't be coming back in a hurry.

I thought this was going to be my last Ejekt Festival, but it wasn't. I went back in 2013 to see the Pet Shop Boys (and in the process met my girlfriend) and last year to see Muse. This year, if all goes well, I'm going again, to see The Killers this time. It will be the first time The Killers play in Greece. They were due to play back in 2009, but the organizers decided to cancel the gig because... wait for it... it was raining!!! Thankfully, I was in London at the time and saw them a couple of days later at that year's Hard Rock Calling Festival in Hyde Park. (It did rain during that festival, but it wasn't cancelled). Thankfully the Ejekt Festival organizers are a different company from the one which cancelled their gig back in 2009...

Ska! Ska!

Αλλά όχι chou chou! Πρόκειται να αναφερθώ στη μουσική ska της Jamaica και - κυρίως - στην αναβίωσή της στα τέλη των 70's και αρχές των 80's.
Κατ'αρχήν αν ρωτήσω, με το που σκέφτεστε τη Jamaica ποιο είδος μουσικής σας έρχεται στο μυαλό, φαντάζομαι πως η περισσότεροι θα πείτε "η reggae". Έ, ένας πολύ απλοποιημένος ορισμός για τη ska είναι ότι είναι reggae παιγμένη σε απίστευτα γρήγορη ταχύτητα. Βέβαια, απ'οτι διάβασα πρόσφατα σε κάποιο άρθρο, η ska προϋπήρξε της reggae, οπότε μάλλον θα ήταν πιο σωστό να πούμε ότι η reggae είναι ένα είδος "slowed-down ska". Όσο για το Ska Chou Chou που για κάποιους απο εμάς στοιχείωσε την εφηβεία - ή την προεφηβεία - σ'εκείνο το μακρυνό 1982 βάλτε το στο YouTube και θα καταλάβετε περι τίνος πρόκειται. Από τη χρονολογία και μόνο φαίνεται πως ήταν ένα παράπλευρο αποτέλεσμα της αναβίωσης στην οποία θα αναφερθώ.
Αυτή λοιπόν η αναβίωση του τέλους των 70's ξεκίνησε με την δισκογραφική εταιρία 2-Tone και τα κυριότερα συγκροτήματα ήταν οι Madness, οι Specials, οι Selecter και οι Beat. Σ'αυτούς μπορούμε να προσθέσουμε - ίσως - τους Ruts και - σίγουρα - τους Bad Manners, που μάλιστα εμφανίστηκαν πριν από λίγο καιρό στο ΑN CLUB στα Εξάρχεια.
Οι Madness λοιπόν ήρθαν επιτέλους στην Ελλάδα το Σάββατο 16 Ιούνιου 2007 για να εμφανιστούν στο Ejekt Festival εκείνης της χρονιάς στο προπονητήριο του Baseball στο Ελληνικό. Ήταν το συγκρότημα που άνοιξε τη βραδιά (ευτυχώς, όπως θα δούμε αργότερα). Απίστευτη η ενέργεια του group, παρά τα χρονάκια τους, και απίστευτο το κέφι στο κοινό από κάτω μαρτυρας του οποίου ήταν το σύννεφο από χώμα που σηκώθηκε μπροστά από τη σκηνή και διατηρήθηκε σε όλη τη διάρκεια της εμφάνισής τους και προερχόταν από αυτούς που χόρευαν ασταμάτητα. "Fuck art, let's dance" ήταν εξάλλου το μότο τους όταν πρωτοξεκίνησαν.

Έπαιξαν όλα τα κομμάτια που θέλαμε να ακούσουμε κάποια από τα οποία τα περίμενα για 27 ολόκληρα χρόνια. Σε κάποιους από εσάς κάτι θα λέει η παρακάτω εισαγωγή (και το τρελλό σαξόφωνο που την ακολουθεί):

Μπορεί στο δημοτικό να μην κατάφερνα να αποστηθίσω το μάθημα μου πχ στην ιστορία, το παραπάνω απόσπασμα όμως το είχα απομνημονεύσει με την πρώτη!

Ένα χρόνο μετά, μαθαίνουμε ότι επανασυνδέονται οι Specials, το άλλο μεγάλο συγκρότημα της συγκεκριμένης αναβίωσης. Αρχίζουν τις εμφανίσεις με μεγάλη επιτυχία πρώτα στη Βρετανία και κατόπιν στην Ευρώπη και τελικά το περασμένο καλοκαίρι, την Παρασκευή 11 Ιουνίου 2010, έρχονται και στην Ελλάδα για να εμφανιστούν στο Kosmos Festival στο Θέατρο Βράχων όπου και έκλεισαν την πρώτη βραδιά.

3 χρόνια μετά λοιπόν, άλλη μια βραδιά με απίστευτο κέφι και χορό παρόλο που οι Specials δεν κουβαλάνε την "τρέλλα" των Madness. Μοναδικό παράπονο ότι δεν βγήκαν για encore. Ο λόγος, όπως διάβασα τις επόμενες μέρες, ήταν η κάτωθι νεαρά η οποία όχι μόνο ανέβηκε στη σκηνή και άρχισε να χορεύει, αλλά στο τέλος άρπαξε το μικρόφωνο και άρχισε να τραγουδάει.

Τι άλλο έγινε όμως σ'αυτά τα δύο φεστιβάλ;
Στο Kosmos Festival πριν από τους Specials εμφανίστηκαν οι Staff Benda Bilili και οι Dub Inc.


Στην είσοδο είχε και πάγκους με βιβλία, κοσμήματα, αλλά και κουζίνα από διάφορες χώρες του κόσμου.

Στο Ejekt ήταν να εμφανιστούν οι Beastie Boys και οι Underworld. Μετά τους Madness όντως ανέβηκαν στη σκηνή οι Beasties. Οι οποίοι ανάμεσα στα άλλα μας έπαιξαν και μερικά από τα πολύ ωραία instrumental κομμάτια του - τότε - καινούργιου τους δίσκου.

Όμως κάπου στη μέση του set είδαμε μια μεγάλη στήλη καπνού. "Θα τους καήκαν τα βρώμικα" σκεφτήκαμε. Έλα όμως που η φωτιά επέμενε. Και εντωμεταξύ οι θεατές στην εξέδρα (των "VIP" τρομάρα τους) που ήταν στο πίσω μέρος, κοντά στην έξοδο, αντι να παρακολουθούν τους Beasties κοιτούσαν τη φωτιά. Και καπάκι οι Beasτie Boys μας ανακοινώνουν ότι πρέπει να αποχωρήσουν. Και αποχωρούν. Και βγαίνει και ένας από τους διοργανωτές στο μικρόφωνο και μας ανακοινώνει ότι οι Underworld δεν θα εμφανιστούν και η συναυλία ακυρώνεται.
Τι να κάνουμε κι εμείς, κατευθυνόμαστε προς την έξοδο. Και τι να δούμε: Το stand με τα (δωρεάν) t-shirts, καμμένο. Τα τζάμια στο χώρο που χρησίμευε για καμαρίνια των συγκροτημάτων σπασμένα. Και στο parking αυτοκίνητα να καίγονται.

Κανείς δεν ήξερε τι είχε γίνει. Πριν φύγω όμως αποφασίζω να πάω στο bar γιατί μου είχε μείνει μια μάρκα για αναψυκτικό.
"Μια coca cola", λέω στον "μπάρμαν".
Μου βγάζει ένα γεμάτο καφάσι, το ακουμπάει στη μπάρα και μου λέει: "Πάρε όσες θες. Έχει και fanta". Κοιτάζω γύρω μου βλέπω κόσμο να κουβαλάει μπυκάλια ουίσκι, βότκας κτλ. Οι διοργανωτές πουθενά. Και μαζί με τους διοργανωτές την είχαν πουλέψει και οι μπάρμεν. Οπότε όπως καταλαβαίνετε γινόταν κανονικό πλιάτσικο. Κάποια στιγμή μάλιστα ο "μπάρμαν" βάζει μια φωνή: "Τι κάνετε εδώ πέρα κωλόπαιδα! Πλιάτσικο, έ; Δε ντρέπεστε!" Πέφτει για πέντε δευτερόλεπτα μια σιωπή την οποία σπάει ο ίδιος ο "μπάρμαν": "ΧΑ ΧΑ ΧΑ ΧΑ!" Οι υπόλοιποι βγάζουν εκπνοές ανακούφισης και συνεχίζουν με την ησυχία τους - και χωρίς ενοχές πλέον - το πλιάτσικο.
Τελικά αποφασίσαμε να φύγουμε γιατί έτσι και έρχονταν τα όργανα προστασίας του πολίτη πρώτα θα έριχναν ξύλο και μετά θα έκαναν ερωτήσεις όπως το ποιος έβαλε τη φωτιά, ποιος έκανε το πλιάτσικο κτλ.
Ανέλαβα λοιπόν να βρω το δρόμο για τη παραλιακή, για να πάρω το τραμ. Την είχα ξανακάνει αυτή τη διαδρομή το 1999 μετά τους Saint Etienne και νόμιζα ότι θα ήταν εύκολο. Έλα όμως, που από το 1999 η γεωγραφία και η περίφραξη του παλιού αεροδρομίου είχε αλλάξει! Πίσω μου είχαν μαζευτεί και κάτι χαμένοι που με ακολουθούσαν γιατί νόμιζαν ότι ξέρω τον δρόμο. Τελικά αφού παρα τρίχα δεν πέσαμε σε μια ακάλυπτη τρύπα φτάσαμε στο τραμ. Το οποίο κάποια στιγμή ήρθε. Αλλα επειδή αυτή η επεισοδιακή βραδυα δεν θα μπορούσε να λήξει τόσο εύκολα, λίγες στάσεις πιο κάτω το τραμ τράκαρε με ΙΧ. Κλασικός Ελληναράς (άντρας) οδηγάρας που νόμιζε ότι με το μπρίκι του θα προσπερνούσε το τραμ στη στροφή (και θα εντυπωσίαζε τη ξανθιά που είχε δίπλα του).

Γύρισα τελικά σπίτι με ταξί γιατί τη άλλη μέρα πετούσα για Γαλλία. Και απο εκεί, στο εξωτερικό με το κινητό έψαχνα στο Internet να δω τι έγινε. Κάπως έτσι βρήκα και το blog της Γωγώς που από τότε το παρακολουθώ ανελλιπώς και με παρακίνησε να ανοίξω το δικό μου. Η εξήγηση λοιπόν είναι ότι μπήκαν κάτι κουκουλοφόροι (τους οποίους κανείς δεν είδε, όποιον και αν ρωτήσεις) τα έκαψαν και τα έσπασαν όλα και τραυμάτισαν τον έναν από τους Underworld οι οποίοι από τότε δεν θέλουν να ξανάρθουν να εμφανιστούν στην Ελλάδα. Ποιος ήταν άραγε ο πανέξυπνος που σκέφτηκε να τοποθετήσει τα καμαρίνια των συγκροτημάτων (backstage στα Ελληνικά) μπροστά από τη σκηνή και μάλιστα στην είσοδο από εκεί που περνούσε όλος ο κόσμος καθώς έμπαινε στο χώρο; Μπαίνοντας εγώ μάλιστα είδα έναν από τους σαξοφωνίστες των Madness να κάνει πρόβα. Για να μη πούμε για τους σεκιουριτάδες της εισόδου που είχαν μαζί τους και σκυλιά (για να φοβηθούμε άραγε;) αλλά μόλις μπήκαν οι "κουκουλοφόροι" πήραν τον πούλο.

Δεν διεκδίκησα καθόλου αποζημίωση για το εισητήριό μου. Άλλωστε δεν δώθηκε ποτέ. Εγώ αυτό που ήθελα να δω το είδα: Τους Madness. Άντε και ολίγη από Beastie Boys (που θα ήθελα όμως να είχαν ολοκληρώσει το set τους για να ακούσω και το Fight For Your Right. Δεν καιγόμουν για τους Underworld. Αν θέλω να ακούσω Άγγλους να γκαρίζουν "lager, lager" πήγαινα και στη pub της γειτονιάς μου στο Λονδίνο.
Δύο μέρες μετά ήμουν στη Λυών. Το μενού είχε Rolling Stones. (Που δεν της είχαν κάτσει της γκαντέμως της Ντιντής στο ΟΑΚΑ τη προηγούμενη χρονιά). Χωρίς προβλήματα διοργάνωσης.
